Microtiming in the rhythmic structure of Candombe drumming patterns

Abstract: This chapter presents the results of measuring and analyzing the microtemporal properties of rhythmic patterns in Uruguayan candombe drumming, and discusses their relationship to the underlying metrical structure. The research is based on the analysis of audio recordings using computational techniques, using a dataset of multi-track recordings of renowned candombe players. The experimental results obtained provide a better understanding of the micro-temporal characteristics of the main rhythmic patterns in candombe and their interactions, and how they can be affected by various factors such as performance context, tempo, personal style, and group interactions.
