Field Recordings

In 1991, I began making field recordings of traditional candombe groups from the neighborhoods of Sur (Cuareim), Palermo (Ansina), and Cordón (Gaboto).

Teatro de Verano 1992

In February 1992, I recorded the drum groups of several traditional comparsas after they left the stage at the end of their performance in the carnival competition held at the Ramón Collazo Summer Theater.

EUM 1992

During 1992 I organized four "studio" sessions with groups of three and four drummers from the neighborhoods of Sur, Palermo and Cordón. The recordings were made at the Escuela Universitaria de Música (EUM) with the home audio and video equipment available at the time.

CSIC 1995

In 1995, I received funding from CSIC for an audio and video recording session in a professional studio. Three groups of four drums were recorded, two in the Ansina style and one in the Cuareim style.

Zavala Muniz 2014

In September 2014, Martín Rocamora and I organized a recording session with five leading drummers from Ansina, with the participation of Gustavo Oviedo, Fernando "Hurón" Silva, Héctor Manuel Suárez, Sergio Ortuño and Luis Giménez. The session took place in the Zavala Muniz Hall of the Teatro Solís in Montevideo, using high-definition audio and video equipment. The recordings are available on the Candombeando website.
