1991, rev. 1995, 2019 — variable instrumental ensemble
atracción fatal is a piece for instrumental ensemble of variable integration. There is no general score for the piece, only the parts of the different instruments, which contain varying degrees of indeterminacy. The piece is performed without a conductor and each part is played independently, following a common tempo. After a diffuse beginning and a chaotic development, the work culminates converging to a simple ‘attractor’. Numerous quotations appear in the instrumental parts; an incomplete list of sources includes Johann Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Igor Stravinsky, Alban Berg, Pierre Boulez, Héctor Tosar, Luis Jure, Coleman Hawkins, Charlie Parker, Eric Dolphy, John Coltrane, Richard Rodgers, Johnny Green, and most especially Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins, and Béla Bártok. The piece was revised in 1995 to be performed by the Montevideo Philharmonic Orchestra, and again in 2019 to be performed by the Municipal Symphonic Band.
Premiere: 1991-06-05, Auditorio Carlos Vaz Ferreira, Montevideo.
